Leash Training A
Dog - The Importance of It
Dogs
need to learn that walking on a leash means no pulling.
Once you teach this, the leash is a great way to help set
boundaries for your pet, because you are in charge and
make the decisions on where you both
go.

Dogs off
the leash and thinking for themselves won't respect your
authority. Running free, a dog can suddenly take off
after another dog, a child, run into the street, or just
run away.
When you
walk your dog using a leash, you are able to control your
dog to a certain extent. The dog may still try to attack
another animal, but you are able to pull him away
easily.
You are not in control
of any other animal that may run free, but you can still tell
yours "no" and your dog will know that you are the
one in charge.
If your dog
is not on a leash, they are not controlled. Because they
still have animal instincts, they may hear an animal make
a noise, and run after the animal. Other animals could
get hurt this way.
Keeping
your dog on a leash gives you control of the situation,
and keeps your dog a great deal calmer. It is essential
to use a leash while training your dog.
One of the
most important aspects of training is using consistent
and well timed praise or corrections. Use of a leash and
collar allows you to keep your dod close to you so that
you can provide praise or correction at the proper
time.
Without a
leash, it is difficult to control a dog, and would make
it almost impossible to train him or her. The recall
("COME") command is one of the most important things to
teach a dog, however many dog owners find this to be one
of the most difficult command to teach.
Many people
often quickly move to off leash recalls, although
consistent and repetitive training ON LEASH will achieve
a recall that happens every time (please watch for
upcoming articles about recalls). When your dog is
without a leash, there are many distractions: a tree, a
squirrel, or you.
Many times
you will be number three on the list of choices. When
training, you must remove any other choices, so the dog
can only respond to you. Avoiding the other wrong choices
allow you to avoid the negative attention your dog may
get from the incorrect choices.
